as american forces fought their way up through italy against a very well-trained, very well-equipped professional german opposition, dan inouye was a proud member of this battalion. and in fierce combat, dan inouye was gravely wounded on the battlefield. he was brought home. he was, as we all know, lost his arm in that -- as one of the wounds that he sustained. and interestingly and coincidentally, he went to a veterans hospital in chicago where a person in the same ward with also grievous wounds was another american army, actually second lieutenant who had also been wounded seriously in italy, one bob dole. second lieutenant bob dole of kansas. and there began a friendship that lasted to this day. both gravely wounded, both dedicated more than ever to serve their country. both served with distinction. and the friendship, the bonds of friendship that were forged in that hospital between bob dole and dan inouye were unique and enduring. so dan inouye returned back to his beloved hawaii, and the story goes -- and i don't know if it's true or not. the story goes that dan inouye went dow

it reminded me when i was in congress i have the invitation of president carter to visit italy with the delegation. we went there to deliver assistance from the united states government after an earthquake in southern italy. in one of the villages we visited there was a rehearsal for first communion going on in the church. just about every seven-year-old in the village was there practicing. when the earthquake hit, the roof came down and every seven- year-old in the village was gone. it was impossible to console people there. not only have they individually lost their child, which is unthinkable, but the whole town had passed -- have lost that class. their babies. that really transformed my thinking about how fragile life is. this was a natural disaster. what happened in the town -- newtown was a personal decision whose judgment was impaired. how could he do this? because he had his own problems. how could he do this? because he had the guns. he had the assault magazines to do it. that is how he could do it. let's at least try to mitigate for the circumstances we may not be able to cont

the story of his service on the battlefields of italy, --, is indeed remarkable, the physical courage that he displayed in winning the medal of honor is alone enough to earn the title hero. but rising above his physical courage and the guts that he showed is the moral courage that it took for dan inouye and his fellow japanese americans to even set foot on that battlefield. what is it that spurs some of our countrymen to offer their lives in defense of a country that shuns them? where does that love of country come from? and how can we impart some of it to those who too often take this country for granted? it would be a wonderful tribute to dan inouye to seek out ways to encourage such service by future generations. dan inouye's work did not end when he took office -- off his soldier's union you uniform. in many ways, it was just beginning. forced by the loss of his arm to give up dreams of a medical career, he entered politics. his was one of the most remarkable careers of public service that our country has ever seen. we will miss dan inouye so much here in the senate. his leadershi
